i hate cold weather

this is my scholastic challenge piece.at first i was going to add words in the background but when i finished i decided it looked good without the words.

concentration statement:
in my concentration i am going to explore the human body and how it is expressed through the principles of art. i really want to use this concentration to explore different types of styles and medias, and challenge myself to create pieces in different ways that i normally would.

im changing my concentration

ok this is like not even similar to what i had for my first idea for my concentration. but while i was thinking of ideas for my first concentration (individuality vs conformity) i was thinking about censorship and what kind of things society censors, like profanity and nudity. then i was thinking about drawing seemingly naked people but putting a black bar where it should be censored...but thats kinda too obvious.and i realized that like after three pieces for that concentration i would be super bored.and i need to find something i really enjoy drawing, which is people. and last year my concentration focused on the faces and portraits of people, so this year i want to focus more on the human form. so i think im gonna explore how i can portray the principles of art through the human form, like movement, color, contrast, line, pattern, etc. i kinda got the principles of art thing from ellen last year, but she used circles instead of people. idk i want my concentration to be something i enjoy doing, and something i know i will be able to push through.

final concentration idea (:

this year i really wanted to do something that had a legit meaning behind it, or a concept i could explore more in-depth. when we were doing the think sheet it asked what the hardest part and most rewarding part about being a teenager was. i said that figuring out who you are is both the most rewarding and the hardest aspect. beecause it really is a struggle to express who you are or really know what you want in life, but its also really rewarding to look back on all you have accomplished.

heres what i came up with:
i want to explore the concept of identity and how people express themselves when today's society limits individuality with the labels, stereotypes, and expectations they impose on us.

i can express this idea by:
-what it means to be an individual/what makes you unique (for example, your DNA/genes)
-how people express their individuality (passions, like dancing, singing, acting, art)
-labels
-expectations
-breaking expectations: think like "a fruit loop in a bowl of cheerios" (:

im reallyyyy excited because i can really get in depth with this idea and there are a lot of ways to express the idea of identity.

jesse reno: i got really super stuck on my artistic heroes so i started out with him because i loved the workshop we did this year. i thought it really helped get us to loosen up, and it inspired me to rethink my art because last year my art was really flat and everything had to be perfect, but this year im trying to do more layering and spontaneous art. also in this piece the monster thing kinda looks like the huge creepy blob from that movie we watched last year on finals day.

salvador dali: i like him because all of his paintings are really surreal and dream-like. i like this one of the butterflies because its still kind of graphic because it uses bright blocks of color, but it also has the foreground and background to make the painting look more realistic and 3d instead of so flat.

eunice kim: i saw her art in one of the galleries when we went on the downtown portland field trip. her art looks like something id do when im bored, because i have a really bad attention span and im always drawing on my hands or on paper when im in class or else i cant concentrate. its simple but complex because the composition is still thought out and there are hundreds of little tiny circles.

gerard marti: i saw his work when i was in the celebrites gallery in maui last year. he does pop art, andy-warhol type paintings of celebrities and icons.

jeff schaller: encaustic paintings! these dont even look like they were done with wax but theyre amazing

concentration ideasp[

first i thought of things that fly then i thought of flying pigs. then i started thinking of other idioms. another one i thought of was "a leopard can't change its spots," which reminded me of identity crisises/themes of identity like fingerprints and transgender people like the creepy people downtown. then i thought of flying fish, which made me think of opposites. soo yea thats pretty much my logic. im trying to stay away from people because that was my concentration last year.

song & poem

songg: "bigcitydreams" by nevershoutnever

You say we're both little people and you like it that way
But in time I'm gunna put this body to shame (and grow old)
Wear a suit like my old man
Pack up all my things and get myself out of town

We've got it good
Whether you like this town or not
I know it's small but with a big head it's bound to get hot
In the summer
But the summer is a bummer
If you can't leave
This pathetic excuse for a town

That holds all your memories
A lifetime of crushes and your broken dreams
To be anywhere but here
But baby anywhere is away from me

If you got it all figured out
Then what is there to shout about
This midwest town is gunna miss you
Just go ahead and work it out
But first come on and let it out
Scream it shout tell everbody how your gunna leave

In about one year you'll have it all figured out
These big city dream are what you're about
Walking like stangers among these states
Only time will tell how long I can wait

We've got it good
Whether you like this town or not
I know it's small but with a big head it's bound to get hot
In the summer
But the summer is a bummer
If you can't leave
This pathetic excuse for a town
That holds all your memories
A lifetime of crushes and your broken dreams
To be anywhere but here
But baby anywhere is away from me

If you got it all figured out
Then what is there to shout about
This midwest town is gunna miss you
Just go ahead and work it out
But first come on and let it out
Scream it shout tell everbody how your gunna leave

Me again oh so casually
Did you take the hit for me or the home team?

If you got it all figured out
Then what is there to shout about
This midwest town is gunna miss you

poem: "this is just to say" by william carlos williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
